Environmental Sciences Scholarship

In 1993 the Board of Directors established the scholarship to show the chapter’s concern for the environment and for young people in the tri-county area (Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William). It began at $750 per student per year, rose to $3,000 in 1999, and to $5,000 per student per year beginning in 2015. Awards are paid directly to the recipient’s college in four annual installments, and since August 2020 each winner also receives a chapter student membership while the scholarship continues.

Who can apply

Applicants must plan to study at an accredited institution toward an associate (2-year) or bachelor’s (4-year) degree in environmental sciences or a related field. The committee weighs financial need, academic achievement, individual character, community achievements or activities, and the ability to succeed in college. A letter describing your intended course of study and any environmental activities (through school, church, or community groups) is welcome.

How to apply

Complete the application and mail it so that it arrives no later than May 15 to: Scholarship Committee (Sean Gagnon), Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc., Izaak Walton League of America, P.O. Box 366, Centreville, VA 20122-0366. The committee reviews applications and recommends awards to the Board of Directors.
