Leagues & events

  • ‘Bucky’ Sills Winter Skeet & Trap League — begins the first Sunday after New Year’s Day and runs 13 weeks. Started in the mid-1980s, it now fields 28 six-shooter teams (168 members) across six 50-target rounds of skeet and trap.
  • 28th Annual Crush’n Clays — VSSA charity shoot benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, co-sponsored with the Virginia Shooting Sports Association. Save the date: Saturday, June 12, 2027.
  • NRA Women on Target Clinic — see Youth Programs and the calendar for the next date.

Winter Skeet & Trap League

The league began in the mid-1980s and is one of the chapter’s longest-running events. It now fields 28 teams of six shooters — 168 members, about 95% of them chapter members. It is a family-oriented recreational league: the rules encourage friendly competition and let shooters of every skill level compete for awards.

  • When: Sundays, beginning the first week of January. All chapter shotgun ranges are closed to open shooting on Sundays during the league season, and a designated range safety officer is always present.
  • Format: each team shoots six skeet and six trap 50-target matches (two rounds), 600 targets in all. Any gauge legal for the shotgun sports may be used. Competition generally follows National Skeet Shooting Association and American Trapshooting Association rules, and all shooting follows the chapter’s range procedures.
  • Scoring: each shooter’s skeet and trap scores are handicapped separately and updated weekly. A team’s match score is the sum of its four best handicapped scores out of six, each round, accumulated over the whole season.
  • Prizes: the top ten teams, plus individual prizes for high overall average (skeet and trap combined), high and runner-up skeet average, high and runner-up trap average, and most improved overall average.
  • Signing up: first-come, first-served, with priority for teams returning from the previous season; substitutes are always needed to fill in for regular shooters. Members and their families make up most teams, and others are welcome.
