The 90-meter outdoor target field sits next to the field house, and the chapter shoots at its indoor range during the winter months. Target archery is provided for archers who enjoy the sport recreationally and in competition.
Programs and open shooting
- Open shooting and instruction: Thursday evenings, 7–9 p.m., at the indoor or outdoor range.
- JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development, ages 8–18): Sundays, 3–5 p.m.
- Adult Archery Program (AAP): Wednesday evenings, 7–9 p.m.
JOAD and AAP together are the Competition Archery Team, training youth and adults in Olympic-style archery in 12-week sessions. The group includes several U.S. Archery Level 1 and 2 certified instructors and Level 3 coaches. Dates for classes are in the newsletter and on the chapter calendar; see also Youth Programs.
STAR FITA tournaments
A STAR FITA tournament is one where national records can be set and recognized by U.S. Archery. The chapter holds several each year:
- Indoor (18 meters; recurve, compound, or barebow): a two-day Fall tournament on a weekend in November and a two-day Winter tournament in February or March. Each draws nearly a hundred archers from Virginia and surrounding states.
- Outdoor (up to 90 meters, 11 lanes): in May or June, for all ages and bow types.
Registration: each announced tournament has a registration form and a waiver, which you mail to the registrar named on the form; you get an email confirming receipt and your shooting date and time. Fees are set per tournament — ask the Target Archery Director. Results and updated range records are posted after each event.
